Spa Chemicals
Bliss SpaWith locations in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, ..... Several spa chemicals are used in the systems which function best. The spa needs chemicals added to prevent the growth of microorganisms and algae. Because these things thrive in the warm wet environment of a spa or hot tub, it is vitally important to have a complete spa sanitation system and preferably a back up system in the event of failure of system number one.
The first concern in the entire environment of the spa is the use of a good pump and a filter that blocks at the micrometer range. The spa chemicals bromine or chlorine are the first line of defense against disease caused by improper spa sanitation. These spa chemicals are often supplemented by UV sterilization, an ozone generator or a spa ionizer-also known as an ion generator.
If chlorine is the only spa chemical used then the periodic use of an algaecide such as polyquat is important because algae is especially resistant to chlorine. Chemically, polyquat is n-alkyl-dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. Since polyquat for spas is sold at a huge markup, a money-saving tip is to purchase the spa chemical for swimming pool algaecide and scale down the amounts for use in the spa.
Periodically, a special regimen of spa chemicals should be added for additional sanitation. This process is known as "shocking" the spa. The spa chemicals added are either potassium monopersulfate (a non-chlorine shock) or copious amounts of chlorine granules. After the shock treatment, a minimum wait time of fifteen minutes for the potassium monopersulfate and 8 hours for the chlorine granules should be maintained.
The three measurements to keep in mind when adding spa chemicals are the PH, the calcium hardness and the total alkalinity. All three must be maintained within normal range to maximize spa operation. Particularly important are the total alkalinity and PH. These must be balanced correctly in order for the spa chemicals of bromine or chlorine to function at maximum efficiency.
Improper levels of spa chemicals can result in serious damage to the liner of the spa and to the metal elements of the spa's plumbing.
Use of spa chemicals to maintain the healthy and disease free water in your spa or hot tub is a good exercise to be sure your relaxing soak won't turn into a nightmare of disease due to moisture loving organisms. It's relatively simple to perform the needed cleaning yourself, or you can hire the work done by a lawn and pool care specialist.
