Lawn Care Mushrooms

Introduction

Mushroom belongs to the body of fungus that grows in natural woods or any rotting material like branches and logs. Mushrooms are discouraged from lawns due to aesthetic concerns.

Problems created by mushrooms:

Mushrooms can create many problems on your lawns. Though not dangerous for your lawn, they can be so for small children and pets. A mushroom strewn lawn can look bedraggled and moist. They have a large life span and can survive as long as there is organic body in the soil. If not controlled they can occupy a large amount of lawn in a short time. Many people find the look of their lawn spoilt due to these big and small mushrooms.

Prevention of mushroom growth:

Mowing the lawn before rains can control the growth of mushrooms. Keeping the lawn free from fallen organic debris like wooden logs,. can also prevent their appearance. Other precautionary measures include aeration of the lawn and handpicking the mushrooms as soon as they appear.

Treatment of mushroom infested lawn:

Mushrooms can disappear from the lawns when the weather becomes too dry or cold. However, they are never really eliminated and are only waiting for rains to grow again. There are many types of mushrooms, which can infect your lawns. They can be fairy rings, which grow in circular or semi-circular direction, inky caps which are considered more destructive than others. Having proper aeration and drainage facility can also reduce mushrooms considerably. Also, removing excess thatch can be beneficial. Sometimes in case of more infection you can also apply nitrogen fertilizer. Replacing the infected soil with clean soil can control mushrooms like fairy rings. Care should be taken not to allow infected soil to pass on to mushroom free area as the pores can then spread. Several fungicides containing flutolanil, pyraclostrobin or azoxystrobin can help you to get rid of them effectively. However, all these fungicides should only be used after carefully reading the label on the products. There is another approach to treatment used by many who find use of fungicides ineffective, and that is time. Simply taking temporary measures like breaking the mushrooms to dry and using shovel for uprooting is considered the best way of tackling them.

Some mushrooms are also considered beneficial to plants. But, mostly, in lawn care, the place of mushrooms is very limited.
