Green lawn care:

Green lawns are areas, planted with grass or clover, which are maintained at a low height. Sign of a healthy lawn is in its lush, even, green colour. Following a few guidelines can help your lawn regain its green glowing look.

Principles of green lawn care:

There are certain common principles in any kind of lawn care. To achieve a green turf, you need to pay attention to common maintenance issues like mowing, watering, fertilization etc. In mowing, the role of a sharp blade is very important as dull blade can end up creating brown patches. Watering your lawn properly is also important. Watering your lawn too much can flood the roots and watering too little can leave you with a dried turf. The frequency of watering also depends upon the grass in the lawn and the season you are having. For fertilizing your lawn, organic compost should be preferred. The amount of fertilizers you use depends a lot on fertility of the soil. If the soil is fertile enough then the use of fertilizers should be kept minimum. Controlling thatch and fungus growth is another area requiring close attention. Some types of fungus like Mushrooms can make your lawns look far from green and smooth. Early precaution and eradication is the key. Sometimes you also need to follow pest management. However, Pesticides should be used with caution as they not only harm your health but can also disturb the delicate balance of environment.

Getting started:

The process of having a green lawn should start by first understanding your definition of 'green.' Mostly, too green lawns are not considered healthy, as they are a product of too much fertilization and artificial chemicals. Instead a slightly lighter shade of green is considered to be pest and disease resistant. Next, The lawn should be freed from debris and unwanted leaves. Aeration can be done to provide more air. Then compost can be spread evenly followed by a round of overseeding. Weeding and pest management should be done at regular intervals. Special precautions need to be taken in terms of nematodes, which can create burn spots in your lawn. Then the basic principles of lawn care should be followed to have an environment friendly lawn of your dreams.

In case, the task seems daunting, you can consider seeking professional help.
