Bermuda Grass Lawn Care

What is a Bermuda Grass Lawn?
Bermuda grass lawn is a sun loving warm season grass. It can be easily planted from grass seeds and provides a beautiful medium heighten turfgrass lawn. Bermuda grass can be easily found on golf courses, sports fields and arenas, reclamation areas, parks, coastal areas and pastures. They are drought resistant species and largely found in the Southern areas. Bermuda turf requires a moderate amount of lawn grass care maintenance and mowing.

Bermuda Grass Lawn care

The annual schedule of Bermuda grass lawn care can be divided in four intervals of 3 months. Different type of care is required during each interval or season. These intervals are divided from March to May, June to August, September to November and December to February. The lawn care process mainly involves the following processes.

1. Mowing: During spring mow the grass before it gets taller than 1.5 to 2 inches. Follow the same mowing process till August. Raise the mowing height by 0.5 inches as the winter approaches that is from September to November. Mow the grass to 1inch during December to February before it grows than 1.5 inches.
2. Fertilizing: Fertilizer is mainly used in proportion to nitrogen per thousand square feet. Let the proportion be 1 pound per thousand square feet from March to August, 0.5 pounds from September to February. Remember don't fertilize the grass that is not over seeded. Consult your Cooperative Extension Center to determine nutrient and lime requirements, and other fertilizing details.
3. Irrigation: Proper irrigation curbs the problems of pest and environmental stress arising mainly during summers. Water the soil to depth of 4 to 6 inches. Since clay soil accept water slowly, irrigate just until the runoff occurs, and continue only after the water has been absorbed.
4. Weed control: Use preemergence herbicides to curb the growth of crab grass, goosegrass and foxtails. Always buy a product, which specially mentions for use on Bermuda grass.
Bermuda grass lawncare if followed according to the calendars can be very effective and help you maintain the lawn more efficiently and easily.
