Wood fireplace mantel:

History

Fireplaces have evolved over the ages. Fireplace mantels are functional designs which add character to the room. The choice of mantel materials has also undergone a revolution.

Wood as mantel material

Wooden mantels have been around since the First World War. They are the most widely chosen mantel type. Wooden mantels are easy to install and maintain. Wood mantels are also easier to work with. Some woods look beautiful when left natural and unpainted. Wood mantels are softer in design. Wood mantels are versatile and allow a lot of self experimentation.

Types of wood fireplace mantels

Mahogany wood mantel

Hand carved, solid mahogany wood mantels are a good choice. Authentic mahogany retailers provide stain grade and plantation grown mahogany. They allow choice of painting and staining to suit the furnishings of the room.

Cherry Wood mantel

Cherry wood being strong and stable is ideal for fireplace mantel construction. It is dense, tight grained and sturdy. It is long lasting and does not decay, once treated. It has a reddish brown hue which enhances the décor of the room.

Oak Wood mantel

Oak wood is very resilient and can withstand a lot of wear and tear. It can be cut, shaped, sanded down or stained. This durable hardwood took the place of cast iron and stone used in the Victorian era. Oak is a superior wood. Being a versatile type, it blends well with all textures. Straight grained red Oak has a soft pink color. Oak wood prices are generally low.

Cedar wood mantel

Cedar wood mantel is made from the Western red cedar. Cedar wood is durable and has long lasting luster. Once carved and sealed, it gives a faint fragrance. It also keeps off moths. Cedar wood is dense and can be preserved for years by cedar oil.

Precautions

Wood is a combustible material and safety considerations are important. It is advisable to check with the fire safety code department and the building officer to find out about the distance of the wood mantel from the fireplace. Installation of a wood mantel would require a fireplace surround of a non-inflammable material such as tile.
