When you switch on the gas fireplace the fresh air mixes with the gas and the gas bursts into flames. The more air that is found in the metal box, the hotter the fire becomes. The now hot air is forced out into the room and beyond.
Generally when the heat is forced out the gas byproducts are also forced into the open. The air that circulates in the room will push these noxious fumes and any smoke out into the chimney stack. From here it leaves your home. With the ventless fireplaces this scene will not occur. Instead more air is drawn into the fire inserts and the fumes are forced out into your home.
