Fireplace Fender- history

Fireplace adds warmth and coziness to a room. Fireplaces are considered to be the ocal point of any house. Stylish fireplace accessories and tools add ornate and sleek designs to the fireplace hearth. One such fireplace accessory that serves as an ornate and protects the logs from rolling off from the hearth is known as fireplace fender. Fenders have been around since the first fireplace was built. Previously the fireplace fenders were put around the fireplace to serve as a barrier for small children and also to prevent ladies long gowns from catching fire. Now with the electric and gas fireplace available, these fenders are a decorative piece that accentuate the hearth and also serve the purpose of protecting the floor and carpets from fire. Fireplace fenders add a touch of class to a set of gas logs or to a wood-burning fireplace. The fenders come in different styles and designs to suit the styles of the home. Fenders are also called "rails" and can be used as footrest set on the hearth across the front of the firebox. Fireplace fenders can be custom-made and handcrafted to suit the specifications of the customer. Fenders are available in leather, brass, aluminum and black wrought iron.

Club Fender

Club fenders originated during the Edwardian era was used exclusively in men's clubs. However it soon found its way into the studies and drawing rooms of the upper class English homes. Apart from providing enhancement for the hearth it also provided extra seating. Club fender not only provided seating but was also a focal point of the room.

Victorian Era Fender

The antique fenders are very much in demand for their craftsmanship and beauty. The Victorian fender is made of brass around the top edge and the rest is made from metal. The fenders of this era were small in size and had beauty and charm.

Gas Log Fenders

Today gas and electric fireplaces are replacing the wood-burning fireplace. To prevent the gas logs from rolling out gas long fenders are available. They are made of solid brass casting with polished brass and high bake lacquered finish. Fenders are not recommended for vent-free gas logs. The price range starts from $150 onwards.

Fireplace fenders add beauty and charm to the fireplace and they come in different designs to complement the other fireplace accessories. It is possible to make fenders in any shape and size. The size of the fireplace opening and width and depth of the hearth needs to be measured to have a custom build fender.
