Curtain blinds

Pretty blinds can be a pleasant and charming alternative to curtains and they are available in many styles to suit myriad personalities and styles of rooms. The three main kinds are roller, roman and ruched blinds.

The easiest way to make a roller blind is by using a kit, which has comprehensive instructions included by the manufacturer which can also be adapted to suit edging to the blind, if desired in a particular shape. The advantage of making a roller blind rather than buying one is that there is scope for choosing the fabric and design you may find pleasing. For best results, choose a firm, lightweight curtain material that is colorfast. Avoid loosely woven fabrics as these have a tendency to go wavy at the edges. The other problem material is if the fabric is bulky, it will be difficult to roll up, thus spoiling the purpose of a roller blind.

Kinds of curtain blinds:
The roman blind is smart and also economical to make as it forms a softly pleated pelmet when pulled up. This curtain blind requires no special fittings, just the lengths of the batten and lath, which is available from any timber merchant or local craft stores that specialize in crafting and hobby equipment. This kind of blind has a channeled lining which serves a dual purpose: that of keeping out light when it is down and containing the wood laths that form the pleats. Since roman blinds have some weight attached to them because of these wooden elements used in it, it is best suited to smaller windows.

Curtain blinds of the third variety are the ruched blinds. Unlike the other kind of window blinds, this kind requires a lot of material to create that luxurious, swagged effect. To make the ruched blind, the fabric is gathered on pencil-pleated curtain heading tape to give a look of fullness width-wise and then gathered at intervals down to its length on vertical strips of standard heading tape, with ruffled scallopes at the lower edge of the curtain. The ruched blind is fixed at the window on simple curtain tracks that are attached to wooden batten. This is raised and lowered by cords, which are drawn through rings at the back. The recommended material for these kinds of blinds is lightweight furnishings fabric that will drape well.
