Bamboo curtain

The origin of bamboo curtains is traced back to Korea and even though the modern day Korean is aided in his tolerance of the intense summer heat with air conditioners in homes and offices, it was not so for his ancestors, who were known to beat the heat in a very environment-friendly manner: with bamboo curtains.
Secret of enduring the heat:
Woven bamboo curtains made by fine artisans who knew how to create a cool atmosphere as well as a fine work of art were the secret of combating intense heat in the olden days and this is an ancient tradition which has modern connotations to it, with the revival of these exquisite arts and crafts and increased awareness and promotion of local and oriental virtues to gracious living.
Types of woven bamboo curtains:
There are three main types according to where they are hung, the first is the Munbal (door curtain), the second, is the Changmunbal (window curtain) and finally, the Gamabal (palanquin curtain). Most craftsmen prefer to use bamboo or reeds to make curtains and to weave a bamboo curtain, one needs to have thin bamboo strips, which, after intense polishing with the use of an iron frame and a good piece should come out smooth as silk.
Designs and styles of bamboo curtains:
Preferences for designs in bamboo curtains are often contrasting; depending on which culture they are meant for. The chinese patterns are complex and colorful, while japanese motifs are simplified whereas the korean designs mostly contain distinctive patterns or images with auspicious meaning. There are two design techniques for bamboo curtains. The first is to weave threads into the curtain and the other to paint directly onto the curtain with Chinese ink after it has been woven.
Bamboo curtain weavers reveal that the making of these unique curtains is a really time consuming affair as well as a monumental effort involved in the production of such fine strips of bamboo as needed in the creation of these curtains. The work involves spinning threads out of completely dried bamboo with diligence and concentration and high levels of skill and stretching the weaver's mental and physical ability to the utmost, before they can master this beautiful art
