Compost Maker

Introduction

Any equipment, which activates and accelerates compost treatment or recycles green waste, can be termed as a compost maker.

What to look for in a compost maker?

Any equipment can be called as a good compost maker if it controls all the essential components of composting like carbon and nitrogen ratios, moisture and good aeration besides being cheap and durable. Basically, composting equipment can made at home or purchased from the market. There are three ways of composting and the equipment used depends on the type you are interested in. the three main ways of composting are, people powered composting. Here the equipment used in simple in nature. If you are simply making a pile, you will only require a sharp shovel to blend and turn. However, if you want to make your job even easier, you can make or purchase compost makers like compost bins, compost tumblers, compost containers and so on. Second is the animal powered way of composting, where you can use farm animals to take share of your load. And last is the earth powered way of composting where you require the help of natural processes like sunshine, water, etc.

Compost makers and operations:

There are several operations for which you may require certain equipments. For chipping and shredding the material, you can require tub grinder and trommel screens. They can shred any organic material in uniform bits. For blending the material you can use motorized versions of cranked and tumbled turners. Different equipment is also used for turning like windrow turning system. It is clear that for each operation different and highly sophisticated equipments can be used.

Advantages of compost makers:

The biggest advantage is the time. Using compost makers decreases the time involved in composting; this is an added advantage when compost is required commercially. Compost makers manage to control all-important elements of composting thus leading to better quality compost. The job becomes easy and the process of composting hastens up. They also control odour and offer weather protection.

Disadvantages:

The biggest disadvantage is the cost attached to the equipments. As each operation requires different material, the cost rises and so does the management. Compost equipments can also take up a lot of space.

Despite the disadvantages, very few will go in for composting without using one or more of the compost makers.
