Compost Boxes

Compost is the natural and cheap way of taking care of your garden. Composting can be done at home effectively by using compost box. Compost box greatly resemble a fenced compost heap. But unlike the fenced containers, compost boxes are usually made from solid wooden bars or plastic. Compost boxes can be made at home, or can be brought from the market. For a small family, a compost box 2' x 2' x 8" deep made out of wood or plastic is sufficient. While for a large family, the size can go up to 2' x 3' x 1' deep. While making your box, care should be taken to make holes in the bottom for facilitating drainage and aeration.

Choosing a compost box:

There are several points, which need to be considered while buying or making a compost box. Compost box should preferably be made out of wood. As compost boxes can be battered with use, strength is an important issue. However, strong does not mean heavy, compost boxes should be light in weight, as they need to be frequently transported and lifted.

Using a compost box:

The bottom of the box can be lined with old manure, or plain newspaper. In addition shredded leaves, ash, sandstone and lime can also be added. After moistening the mixture, worms can be added to the box. To feed your worms, kitchen scraps can be added. The top of the compost needs to be covered by a lid with holes for facilitating ventilation.


Advantages of a compost box

Compost boxes facilitate composting indoors. They can be also be used in vermi-composting. They are very cheap if made at home. They are highly durable. They take care of your kitchen wastes in a natural way. Also compost is sometimes easily turned in the box. Thus, the rate of decomposing increases rapidly. The compost in the box is also enclosed. Therefore it does not fall apart. It is also offers weather protection. Compost box discourages rodents from getting to your compost.

Disadvantages of a compost box:

The biggest disadvantage is that compost boxes have limited holding capacity. Readymade compost boxes are expensive and are mostly available in plastic

However, the disadvantages can be overcome with the help of careful planning.
