Compost Bin Plans

Compost Bins are the best option in arriving at primary organic compost. Though compost heaps are simpler as they involve only adding to a compost pile in the garden, Compost bins have several advantages. Their one clear overriding value is that Compost bins help control heat and moisture content, which in turn speeds up the decomposition process.

Types:
There are several types of Compost bins, the most commonly utilized are:
1. Worm Composting Bins
2. Wire Mesh Composting Bins
3. Portable Wood and Wire Composting Bins
4. Wood and Wire Stationary 3 Bin System.

Worm Composting Bins:

The Worm Composting Bins are usually used for vermicomposting. These are portable and can be carried indoors and put on a tabletop. It can be used year-round and can handle 6 pounds of household and garden refuse per week, which is typical waste output for a family of four. Its approximate construction cost is approximately $50.

Wire Mesh Composting Bins:

These are the most popular and widely used bins in composting. They are also the least expensive to construct as they cost as low as $5 to $15. They can be used as turning and holding bins and the end product -compost- is usually available within 6 months to 2 years.

Portable Wood and Wire Composting Bins:

These are portable units and provide moderate amounts of compost with least effort. Waste should be added to the bin and compost will be ready in 6 months to 2 years. The cost of this bin is approximately $50.

Wood and Wire Stationary 3 Bin System:

This system is the most versatile. It is ideal for turning out large volumes of compost in the shortest time possible. Because of the 3 Bin Systems, it can store large amounts of garden and household waste. Its cost is a bit steep compared to the other three Bins, approximately $115.

Which compost bin you opt for depends on your refuse volume, your garden size and your pocketbook. The above listed are the most frequently found compost bins, though concrete bins are also used by some. But concrete bins become a permanent feature and cost more to build. How you decide to compost and the price factor should be your guiding principles in buying or constructing a compost bin. But their intrinsic value in generating good quality compost is undeniable and scores over a simple compost pile.
