Use stocking:

The history of Christmas stocking:

Like all the other good Christmas legends the story of the Christmas stocking has many versions. However the original story has evolved to allow for differences in culture, time period and of course good old-fashioned story telling. The story goes that once there was a father with three beautiful daughters. Even though all the daughters were beautiful and kind the father was worried about their marriages as he was lacking the funds to pay their dowries. Then on a fine day St. Nicholas of Myra was passing through the same villages and came to know about the three poor daughters from the locals. He knew that the father was too proud to accept a gift and so he waited till dark peeped into their house and dropped three bags of gold coins down their chimney. The daughters happened to have spent the evening in washing their clothes and had hung their stockings by the fireplace to dry. Fortunately the bags of gold coins dropped into the stockings that were discovered the next morning. The daughters were all married well and happily. The people came to know about the generosity of St. Nicholas and from that time began to hang their stockings by the fireplace in the hope of getting similar gifts.

Use of Christmas stocking in the America:

There is a plenty of debate about the fact that when American kids started to hang their stocking by the fir place on Christmas eve. Some believe that Thomas Nast who was the first to draw stockings on the mantle piece in his 1886 illustrations for a story called Santa Claus and his works. It is also said that like most of the other American customs the Christmas stocking also probably came from across the oceans with the generations of immigrants. May be some of the Catholic knew the legend of St. Nicholas and spread it or perhaps the early Dutch settlers modified their custom of putting out clogs of straw for Santa's Reindeer. It may also be derived from the Italians children tradition of keeping out their shoes for La Bufana, the good witch. What ever may be story, in classic American tradition all these legends and customs got mixed together along with some home grown ideas thus the Christmas stockings became an important aspect of Christmas celebrations.
