Selection of plants and fish for the backyard pond

About the backyard pond:

A typical backyard pond may be a small sometimes no larger than 3 to 4 feet in diameter and they are typically meant for giving a natural outlook to the backyard and in addition it can also be a relaxation point with scenic beauty that can provide interest and enjoyment. The water in the pond may attract wildlife in the backyard mainly birds, butterflies, frogs and fishes. Sometimes a backyard pond can also be built in barrels or other patio containers as it mainly depends upon the availability of space in the backyard. Inclusion of fish and plants will not only add to the beauty and allure but also the backyard will be alive with the visual appeal and sounds of water in motion.

Selection of plants for the pond:

A mix of emergent, submerging and floating species of plants are best recommended for that typical backyard pond. Emergent plants such as cattails, arrowhead, and water lilies can be added to the margins of pools. Elodea a common submerging species is often used as oxygenators. These are plants are effective in removing carbon dioxide from the water and add oxygen are also very essential in most ponds to keep the water clear.

Fishes for the backyard ponds:

Addition of fishes in a backyard pond will greatly enhance the beauty of the pond and the backyard, and can also serve as natural mosquito-killers in the summer. One very important aspect that should be taken care of before letting the fishes in the water is chemical use. Use of potentially harmful chemicals to clean the pond or fertilizers for the plants should be avoided. The size of the pond determines the size and number fish one should buy. Goldfish or koi are two of the most common varieties that are widely used, as most any other fish needs warmer water than a pond would provide naturally. Goldfish is a hardier fish and initially one can start out with some small, inexpensive goldfish until the conditions right to keep fishes alive is made sure of.
