Maintenance of the pond in the backyard
A guide for the maintenance of the backyard pond:
A pond in the backyard acts as a perfect eco system. Hence it is very important to take proper care and maintain the pond in order to retain the natural balance. One of the most common problems in many newly established ponds are algae. A symptom of the algae existence in the ponds includes the turning of the water into an unsightly green after a few days. To reduce the algae reducing the nutrients and decreasing the amount of light entering the water will help to great extent. Scavengers such as snails may also help clean up wastes from the bottom of the pond. Ponds filters can also help in reducing the algae but they need to be cleaned frequently. Chemicals can also be used to control algae, however a cautious use is recommended, as they can be toxic to other plants and aquatic life. Other than this excessive plant growth, especially of free-floating plants, may also be a problem. A periodically skimming off the excess growth of duckweed, water lettuce, and other floating plants can be done to get rid of them. Monthly, pruning of the dying plant material will help in the cleaning of the water. During the springtime cleaning out some of the decaying plant material accumulating in the bottom of the pond can also be done. However it should always be kept in mind that a natural pond is not a swimming pool and too much cleaning can do more harm than good.
