Container gardening in the backyard

An introduction to container gardening:

Container gardening not only saves a lot of space, but it is also a smart alternative if the gardening options are restricted by too much shade, poor soil, too little time, limited mobility or a difficult climate. Growing plants in containers can be much more productive than a regular garden while allowing one to avoid most pest and disease problems. However the best part of a container garden is that it brings the garden right up close, creating a sense of intimacy that one cannot get in other ordinary backyard gardens. Right from terra cotta, plastic or pressed fiber pots, you can use recycled whiskey barrels, 5-gallon food buckets, bushel baskets, plastic tubs, wooden planter boxes to old tires, almost anything can serve as a container for growing plants. Other than these self-watering planters, which have built-in water reservoirs, are also great solutions.

Preparation of soil for the container garden:

The basic features of soil for the container growing plants are, they should be light and friable, well drained and moisture-retentive as garden soil is much too dense and can introduce disease and insect problems. Container plants are also observed to thrive well in a soil less blend comprising of sphagnum moss, vermiculite or perlite, with the addition of finished compost. One can also go for a pre-mixed blend, such as Container Mix or Self-Watering Container Mix, that are especially formulated for planters that wick moisture from a built in reservoir and are also easily available in most of the gardening stores. However it should be always kept in mind that any soil mix may become compacted over time and if containers seem waterlogged and heavy, one may need to replace soil mix at the start of a new growing season with a fresh mix.

Watering for the container garden:

Without watering the containers in the morning it is likely for the plants to be droopy, if not dead. If the plants get too dry, their delicate feeder roots die and the plant must concentrate its energy on re-growing damaged roots rather than producing fruit or flowers. This implies the use of self-watering planters or a drip-irrigation system.
