Playing hockey

Are you running short of budget and are unable to buy any indoors game and its accessories? Are children not enjoying the outdoor games? Or they are bored of watching television continuously for hours together? All you have to do is fit a goal post. Hockey is the best game that puts you through rigorous exercise. It can be termed as indoor or outdoor game as well. It can be played by elders also.

How to play hockey

Hockey is a stick and ball game with origins dating back thousands of years. It is traditionally played on grass, but more often these days it is played on synthetic surfaces. In hockey, two teams consisting eleven players each compete against each other. They use their 'hooked' sticks to hit, push, pass and dribble a small, hard, white, ball with to score. To score means pushing the ball into the opponent's goalpost. Goalpost is often a net tied to wooden cube. One side of the goalpost is open so that the ball can come in it. This has to be done by passing other team's goalkeeper, who protects the goal, and logically, tries to keep the ball out of goal post.

Player position in hockey

Players' position is very important aspect of the game. Every team must have a goalkeeper. The other ten players are referred as field players. They are dispersed over the field of game. The field players can be segregated into three general categories as attackers, defenders and midfielders. No player has an exclusively defined role except goalkeeper. The attackers are generally on attack while the defenders are generally on defense, and the midfielders do a bit of both. This is but a common sense that in hockey field players are not allowed to use their feet to control the ball. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to use stick, hands, feet or even a body to stop the ball to stop the ball entering the goal post.

Essential skills for hockey

An essential skill for playing hockey is the ability to control, pass, push, stop and shoot the ball with stick. This is called as stick work. It is impressive to watch a player with good stick handling skills.
