Fire Pit Safety - should you be concerned.

Fire pits are a warm edition to any deck, Fire pit safety is mandatory.

By far the best addition that I have made to my deck is a fire pit. I grew up with a huge fire place in an old farm house. I love an open fire and the comfort and relaxation that it brings.

Today's fire pits have been designed for safety and taken out most of the concerns that fire brings. Please review some of our selected merchants for more detailed information.

Some precautions that you should take when selecting and using your fire pit. Look for one that has a screen option. It protects from flying embers and controls the "pop" that some firewood produces from sap. Be sure and keep it away from the deck rails, and move plants that could be in its flame or smoke path.

Supervision
While the screens are great they do not replace competent adult supervision. They do not replace a watchful eye. The best prevention is stopping something before it starts. Always have someone there to just keep an eye on things.

Kids and Animals
While animals always seem to keep their distance from fire from natural

instinct, they also become complacent with their surroundings over time. Just keep an eye on them. Kids, on the other hand, do have that instinct, they learn by guidance. Whether it be taught or learned the hard way. Usually a simple "No Touch!" (what we used that worked rather well) or explain hot and tell them that it is hot and stay away.

I hate to say it, but if you are having a picnic on your deck with a couple of families or more. My opinion is to forgo the fire for safety's sake. Save the fire when it is just your family or a gathering of adults.

When you are done. Make sure that it is all the way out, with no more fuel to burn. Be sure to check it before you go to bed to make sure. It is always better to error on the side of bring too cautious.
